David Wroblewski: The Story of Edgar Sawtelle
This book - one I've been wanting to read forever and a day - is the second from my daughter's lovely Christmas gift idea. It was forwarded to me by my mother-in-law, who wrote a wonderfully charming little note to me and tucked it deep into the pages of this hefty novel for me to discover.
I'm not very far into the story yet, but already I can tell this is going to be one of those very special books that you can get lost in, completely and happily, and there is a strong sense that it will be a story I'll be sad to let go of when the time comes.
And also? The reviews and blurbs are mini-literary wonders in their own right: "This remarkable hybrid seems like an impossibility: an American 'Hamlet,' both ghost story and melodrama, a coming of age tale, a hymn to the land — and, central to it all, some of the best writing about the inner lives of dogs anywhere.
